Aromatic

He makes the sunlight shine with hints of honeysuckle and peonies by the riverbank. Wafts of lavender and jasmine fill the air from the garden up above, where Heaven’s flowers float weightless without gravity to pull them towards the earth’s crust. Here they stand tall to reach for the Son who nurtures their life. Because He is the life. Jesus’ life never ends.

Smell the fragrance of the wine of the vine He made to celebrate jubilation. Smell the fragrance of the salt of the ocean He made to embrace the seashore. Smell the fragrance of the grapes of wrath stored up for the devil who taunted the earth whom He loved. Jesus aura releases a fragrance. A scent. An aroma. Life emits the fragrance of life. Thus, death can never be evident on one redeemed.

In John 12, Jesus’ fragrance fills the house where a party gathers to honor Him.

“Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.” John 12:1-2

But before Jesus’ fragrance could be sensed, a woman brings her own fragrance. Pure nard. And empties it on His feet.

“Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” John 12:3

This fragrance was so potent that it would have caught the attention of the party-goers long before she got to Jesus to empty it on Him. She walked in with this aroma in hand, but it was only after she anointed Jesus that everyone could smell the aroma.

A fragrance is either amplified or changed by the skin pH it comes in contact with. The pure nard carried its own scent. But Jesus carried His own scent also. Therefore, when the smell of Mary’s perfume filled the room, it created a fragrance only Jesus could create.

Like rain in the desert after a monsoon. The fragrance of wet clay and dirt only rises from the collision of earth and sky.

Smell the invitation of Heaven…

“He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth;
Who makes lightnings for the rain,
Who brings forth the wind from His treasuries.” Psalm 135:7

Let Heaven invade the earth, God, where You came and made Your home among us, to dwell with us.

Breathe in the glory of God. His environment is Heaven and His promised land is peace.

God breathes calm into the deep crevices of the heart.

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7

God’s breath is aromatic.

God’s fragrance is aromatic.

God’s heart is aromatic.

The love of God carries a scent of timeless anointing that He overflows to your spirit because you belong to Him in love, as His chosen Beloved. God’s people carry the fragrance of God’s love.

“I live for God as the fragrance of Christ breathed alike on those who are being saved and on those who are perishing.” 2 Corinthians 2:15

In John 12, Judas did not want to inhale the fragrance of Jesus’ divinity. So, He misses out on the revelation of the moment.

“Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” John 12:5

There will always be those who reject Jesus, but you cannot allow the one who rejects Jesus to inhibit you from enjoying His presence and fragrant oil all around you.

God breathes life into His people.

“This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out,
    who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,
    who gives breath to its people,
    and life to those who walk on it:
“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness;
    I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people
    and a light for the Gentiles,
to open eyes that are blind,
    to free captives from prison
    and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.” Isaiah 42:5-7
